We will be comparing the Sonos Ace to some of the most powerful active noise cancelers, like the AirPods Max, Bose QC Ultra, and Sony WH-1000XM5. We will do some tests comparing microphone pickup, active noise cancellation, and sound quality. Next, we’ll talk about which device you should buy, the Sonos Ace or any of these other competitors. We will compare their microphone pickup in both quiet and noisy conditions using really loud café noise and some wind noise from this fan. It’s now clear that the Sonos Ace sounded great in quiet and noisy conditions. Yes, it didn’t cut through background noise to the same extent as the Sony’s, which has the best mic pickup in this comparison, but it was very close indeed. The AirPods Max’s audio pickup sounded more natural in quiet conditions, but the noise barrier was cutting through my voice too aggressively. The same goes for the Bose QC Ultra.
Overall, all things considered, I think the Sonos Ace’s mic pickup is pretty impressive. In terms of active noise cancellation, the Bose QC Ultra seems to cancel more noise than the Sonos Ace across the entire spectrum , from the lows to the highest levels. The AirPods Max are also a little stronger than Sonos against midrange chatter, but at the same time, they seem to be the weakest of the bunch at rejecting sub-bass rumble, either that or they don’t really cancel out sub-bass hits as accurately as other headphones because you can hear an excessive amount of The sub-bass introduced in the following recording that you don’t hear in other headphones.
The Sonys don’t cut the upper bass into mid-frequency noise as much as the rest, but they do seem to cut more low-frequency sound than the Sonos. In fact, when compared physically on board, the Sony cut out more low-frequency sounds , but the Sonos was more effective at canceling out the upper bass and midrange frequencies.
I know a lot of people say the AirPods Max have the best transparency, and yes they’re very transparent, but they tend to exaggerate the upper mid and high frequencies a bit more to give that sense of crispness, which inadvertently ends up sounding less natural, because in real life, the sounds Even the sounds of the keyboards don’t sound as bright as the way the AirPods Max represent transparency. The Sonos Ace sounds a little less natural than the AirPods because they apply more pressure, making soft sounds sound louder, and feel less transparent in the low and mid-range frequencies. But they sound more natural in the high frequencies compared to the AirPods Max, so I would say overall in terms of transparency, the Sonos Ace is pretty close to the AirPods Max, plus or minus. The Sonys sound the least transparent, because while the Sonys clearly amplify ambient sounds with minimal hiss, when you’re talking to someone, their voices still sound a little vague compared to the Sonos Ace.
Its dynamic range is sure to satisfy even the most demanding listeners, because you’ll hear details that can’t be easily heard. Now, this to me is the most enjoyable thing about Ace. Interestingly, frequency sweeps of its default tuning reveal that the Sonos Ace’s tuning is somewhat similar to that of the AirPods Max, in the sense that it’s not as heavy, but emphasizes the prominence and clarity of the mid-frequencies more. However, the AirPods Max’s sound is more clear in the upper mids and treble than the Sonos. Compared to the Bose QC Ultra, the Bose’s bass is much heavier, so it is able to better reproduce LFE while maintaining brightness and clarity in the upper midranges, so vocals are still clear.
Among them, the Sonos are flat in the middle, so vocals sound more intense. However, the Sonos’s sound is brighter in the upper mids, and this makes the sound sound more striking compared to the Sonos. It’s also the most bass-heavy of the bunch, especially in the region above 100Hz. Also, if you’re wondering about volume, the Sonos are the loudest at 60% volume, followed by the Sonos, then the Bose, and finally the AirPods Max which have the lowest volume, about 4 dB lower than the Sonos at 60% volume.

In my opinion, most people will be happier with the Sonos Ace. this is the reason. I love the AirPods Max because I’m very immersed in the Apple ecosystem, or locked in depending on how you want to look at it, and they’re very comfortable. The ability to seamlessly switch audio between all my devices, from Apple TV to iPad to iPhone. Getting Read Me notifications is great too, but only with Apple devices can you unlock all the AirPods Max features like sound customization, spatial audio with head tracking, seamless switching, and even firmware updates. The Sonos Ace is different , it has more flexibility because with the Sonos app on iOS and Android, you can customize the bass and treble and get firmware updates on both platforms. And although you only get spatial audio from Sonos speakers, you can at least use head tracking with any source. Sonos also has multipoint pairing, which is important to me because I like to stay connected to my Windows PC and my phone at the same time.
The Bose also lets me customize the sound further with EQ presets and a simple graphic equalizer compared to just the Sonos’ bass and treble controls, so I get more flexibility from the Bose overall. They are more comfortable to wear because they are lighter than Sonos and attach more gently. It also folds smaller and comes with a smaller carrying bag. Finally, noise cancellation and transparency are better than the Sonos Ace. These are all very compelling reasons to get a Bose instead of a Sonos.
This is something audiophiles will take note of . So, if you want more flexibility, better comfort, and high-fidelity certified sound, get the XM5. If you want better transparency, if you want to cancel out human chatter, or the noise of babies crying on planes, get the Sonos Ace. Because from my personal experience, as I said, when I was using them on the plane, they mute the midrange better.
