Twitter is trying with an “unmentioning” feature that will permit users to eliminate themselves from discussions. It is restricted to certain users and just on the web version until further notice but looks like a very useful tool.

The “leave this discussion” choice will show up on the menu that pops out of the edge of a tweet on the web version of Twitter. It incorporates the “mute” and “embed” choices also. Clicking the “leave this discussion” choice brings up another menu that details what happens when you leave a discussion: your username gets untagged, it stops any future mentions in that discussion, and it will stop notifications.
The decision to leave from a tweet discussion that might have become unfriendly, not interesting, or that you would rather not have been part of is a great addition to Twitter.
